The Spirit of Ubud

Ubud 3/21/2025-3/23/2025

After the whole Medewi experience I made it back to Canggu and spent a night at our reliable Seabreeze Hostel. We were treating this place as our little home base. We were planning to head to Ubud which was another hour and a half ride but we didn't have the capacity for bringing two people and all of our belongings on our little motorbike. So, we packed little day bags and left our big backpacks at the hostel.

There ride there was uneventful and vibes were so high. I was happy to be with Camila and no longer feeling sick! Yes! We get to this town and the buildings look like ancient preserved temples. And these were just peoples homes. The main streets were lined with restaurants and shops but the little streets that lead to guesthouses, hotels, hostels, etc. were so narrow and cute. These pathways were were made by people for people. It was nice to be in walkways that had no cars or motorbikes. There was this unescapable spiritual feeling that covered the entire city.

The hostel we were staying at was super cute and small. Obviously had free breakfast, that's a must. The first thing we did when we got there was go to this restaurant that over looked a little farm. Food was hitting the spot after the ride. Followed by a little stop at a coffee shop.

It was later in the afternoon and I was feeling pooped but Camila was absolutely loving there area so she kept exploring. After about an hour or two, I was tired of resting in the hostel so I went for a walk and accidentally ran into Camila. I swear it was total chance. We got dinner and called it a night.

Around Ubud there are a ton of waterfalls. So there was one we wanted to check out as well as a cute spot to stop for lunch. On our way there, it begins to rain. We don't mind it at first but then it begins to rain harder and harder! Until it's full blown pouring down. We are already totally soaked so we decide to just continue on and make it to the restaurant. We get a little break from the rain in this cute little mom and pop type place. We get the basic Indonesian meal that's called nasi goreng which is basically fried rice. We waited out the rain and headed to the waterfall. People were swimming in it but I was pretty cold from the rain, I decided to sit this one out. We didn't spend too much time there and headed back to the hostel.

That evening, someone who was in Ubud before us recommended this live music bar for us to check out. We show up and it's totally dead so we head to an asian food spot to get some dinner and kill some time. I made the mistake of getting this noodle soup dish which I think ended up contributing to my downfall. Something about every bite just tasted off and it was not very good. I was starving so I ate the whole thing. After dinner, the live music was popping so we had a beer and listened to some Indonesian guys jam out. The played a lot of American classics as well as songs I had never heard.

Our last morning in Ubud I woke up and something was wrong. I had no appetite for the free breakfast. I was barely able to get anything down. My plate had banana pancakes and water melon. I could not believe how unappetizing the pancake felt to me. I think I managed to get two bites of that down along with the watermelon which was also no cakewalk. We had a long day of traveling ahead of us so I needed to rest and rally. We had to leave the hostel, head back to Canggu, pack out stuff again, return the motorbike, and make it to the east coast of the island where we had a ferry ride to the next island. I rested for as long as I could before we had to check out.

After some resting and taking some Advil and charcoal pills, we headed back to Canggu. The people at Seabreeze were nice enough to let us hang out and pack in the lounge of the hostel. A few days prior, I had found this shoe repair place.  The zipper on the surfboard bag I had was broken and I needed to fix it if I was gonna continue to keep traveling with the board. The day we got back to Canggu, the board bag was fixed and ready to be picked up. I quickly picked up the board bag and returned the motorbike before it was time to make our way towards the dock. I am pretty sure Camila was pretty pissed at me cause she knew I wasn't feeling good but I insisted on continuing with our travel arrangements and push my body.

We took an Uber to the dock where the ferry was departing from. It was an hour or so uber and we could see the guy texting his buddies that he had to cancel his plans for the evening cause he had to drive our butts so far. We felt pretty bad about it so we tipped him well. We made it to the dock with plenty of time to spare. At this point, I was not feeling good and Camila was so not happy with me. We still had a hour boat ride and a twenty minute walk to our hostel.
